Laser collimation of a chromium beam
We have studied laser collimation of a chromium atomic beam using a transverse polarization gradient cooling scheme. We present detailed measurements of the angular distribution of atoms on the beam axis, over a broad range of laser intensities and detunings including those which produce significant excitation, and observe collimation angles as small as 0.16 ± 0.01 mrad (50% quantile). We compa...
متن کاملResonant Laser Manipulation of an Atomic Beam
Theories for laser-atom interactions have been under development since the advent of laser technology. The theories have yet to be adequately integrated into kinetic flow solvers. Realizing this integration would greatly enhance the scaling of laser-species interactions beyond the realm of ultra-cold atomic physics. A representative numerical investigation was conducted using a custom collision...

We report on an experimental method to align a laser beam to a cloud of atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). We show how balanced lock-in detection leads to a very sensitive method to align the laser beam to the atoms in the plane perpendicular to the propagation direction. This provides a very reliable and fast way of aligning laser beams to atoms trapped in a MOT.
متن کاملOptical phase singularities in detection of laser beam collimation.
Optical phase singularities, also called optical vortices, are known to have applications in various branches of optics. Here the role played by optical vortices in collimation testing is explained. Interference and a diffractive experimental setup in which the presence of an optical vortex permits collimation testing are presented. It is shown that the moire fringes that aid in collimation det...
متن کاملLaser collimation of a continuous beam of cold atoms using Zeeman-shift degenerate-Raman- sideband cooling
In this article we report on the use of degenerate-Raman-sideband cooling for the collimation of a continuous beam of cold cesium atoms in a fountain geometry. Thanks to this powerful cooling technique we have reduced the atomic beam transverse temperature from 60 mK to 1.6 mK in a few milliseconds. The longitudinal temperature of 80 mK is not modified. The flux density, measured after a parabo...
